Following the devastating fire at the Carbonne Hall, inside sources reveal that the two primary suspects, both 23-years-old and originating from nearby communes, have admitted to the act. The young men were arrested and held in custody for willful destruction by fire and are presently being questioned further by the Muret Research Brigade. The prosecutors request for an immediate court appearance likely to be granted.
The pair were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crime, according to Toulouse prosecutors. Reports suggest one of the suspects hails from Lafitte-Vigordane, a township close to Carbonne, while the other resides in Castie-Labrande in the east. One of the accused is unemployed, while the other is currently in work. Despite their admittance, they allege to have tried, unsuccessfully, to douse the flames and shout for help.
Early on a Saturday morning, a neighbor found the two men engulfed in the act of setting ablaze a book, leading to a massive fire spreading across the public library situated within the small hall, and later across the heritage building. Although the eyewitness attempted to apprehend the suspects, they managed to escape. The horrendous act has culminated into an inspection that led to a swift apprehension of the culprits in the afternoon.
The destructive act has incurred colossal damages. Whether the motive behind such a heinous act was simple folly or the intent to raze a monument is yet to be ascertained. There’s also the question of whether the men understood the potential magnitude of their actions. A cost of repairs reaching into tens of thousands of euros is projected. The hall was intended to be converted into a cultural center with construction planned for 2025, but this incident forces a return to the drawing board.
