Despite the intimidating atmosphere and excessive police presence witnessed during Alexei Navalny’s funeral, on March 1st, the resilience displayed by thousands of Russian citizens showed that Navalny’s fight for democratic ideals continues to breathe even as the Kremlin tightens its grip. A key figure in Russian politics, Navalny’s untimely death at 47 in detention on February 16 has only fortified the cause for which he dedicated his life.
From the challenges encountered by Navalny’s mother in recovering his body, to the difficulty in finding a suitable location in Moscow for his wake, the authorities left no stone unturned to prevent a public gathering for his final rites. Even though his parents were present, his wife, children and his exiled brother weren’t able to attend the funeral. The public, though largely denied entry to the church and cemetery, stood outside in silent loyalty to Navalny, echoing their solidarity through slogans such as “No to war”, “Putin, murderer” and “Russia Will be Free”. The sentiment of the people was clear : the Kremlin’s stranglehold is being contested.
The Kremlin’s repression strategy seems to be effective in an evident way : diminishing crowd sizes at funerals of assassinated dissenters, the only form of protest now viable. However, Kremlin’s efforts to eradicate dissidence completely are not entirely fruitful. Over 200,000 viewers tuned into Navalny’s organization’s YouTube channel to witness his funeral, showing that the spirit of resistance is far from extinguished.
Close to securing a fifth term as Russia’s head, Putin displays an increasing rigidity in his rule. This rigidity extends to his foreign policies as well, visible in his bold reiteration that Russia is on the path to victory in Ukraine. Despite his call for dialogue with the U.S., Moscow gives no indication of being open to negotiations. Putin’s war objectives remain unaltered, with the idea of conquering Ukraine at its core. His recent threat of a nuclear conflict and “the destruction of all civilization” if Western countries increase their support to Ukraine reveals his escalating aggression.
In the wake of such threats from an increasingly belligerent despot, standing firm is the world’s only response. Navalny might be gone, but his courage and the democratic ideals he stood for live on in the hearts of thousands of Russian citizens.
